The Academic Programmes under CBCS follow the structure given in Annexure I. The nature of the courses for all undergraduate academic programmes is as follows:

  • Core Course: Compulsory components of an academic programme. These courses are to be compulsorily studied as a core requirement for the programme. The contents of the Core Courses shall be as per the UGC Model Curriculum for the subject/discipline concerned. However, the Boards of Studies concerned may recommend a maximum of 20% deviation from the UGC Model Syllabi wherever required.
In case the UGC does not provide model syllabi/curriculum, the Board of Studies shall propose their own Core Courses keeping parity with the total number of credits/courses of similar subjects/disciplines.
  • Elective Course: Elective courses shall be chosen by each student from a pool of courses. These courses may be intra-departmental, i.e., Generic Elective (GE). Students shall have to choose a minimum number of Discipline-Specific Elective (DSE) and GE courses in every semester as prescribed in the course structure. These courses aim to:
    • Be supportive to the discipline of study.
    • Provide an expanded scope.
    • Enable exposure to other disciplines/domains.
    • Nurture student proficiency/skill.

There shall be a basket of at least eight Elective Courses with equal credits. For students of the same discipline/subject, these elective courses shall be intra-disciplinary and called DSE Courses. If students of other disciplines/subjects (within the programme) opt for these electives, they shall be considered inter-disciplinary and called GE courses.

Additionally, there may be courses conducted under the UGC's Programmes on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The University may time-to-time fix the criteria for MOOCs as per relevant UGC guidelines on digital education.

  • Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC):

These courses shall be of two kinds:

    1. Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC): Courses based on content that leads to knowledge enhancement. These include:
      • Environmental Science (2 Credits)
      • Communicative English (2 Credits)
      • Alternative English/Communicative Hindi/MIL (2 Credits)

For BA and B.Com programmes, there shall be a multi-disciplinary course of 4 credits.

    2. Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC): (Minimum 4 credits): These courses are designed to provide value-based and/or skill-based knowledge and include both theory and lab/hands-on training/fieldwork. The main purpose is to provide students with life skills in a hands-on mode, increasing employability. Each university has the freedom to suggest their own papers based on expertise, specialization, and requirements.

Note: A course may also take the form of a dissertation/project work/practical training/fieldwork/seminar, etc.

A student shall study the academic programme as per the scheme of the programme. Even if a candidate earns the required number of credits before the completion of the full duration of the programme, he/she shall not be entitled to the degree.
